This article presents an approach to self-management professionalization strategies carried out by organized journalists. Two cases are analyzed: The Journalists Network of Juarez (RPJ) and the Council of Journalists of the Papaloapan (COPAN). Both groups emerge in a hostile context for journalism in Mexico, orienting their activities towards training for self-protection and the acquisition of professional skills. The conceptual discussion is based on the professionalism model, related to the institutionalization of knowledge, collegiality and professional autonomy, to put it in debate with other ideas on professionalization. The methodological design consisted in observation and interviews, as well as in the systematic review of the online activity of journalists' networks. The results reinforce the need to define journalism based on the practices of its agents. In that sense, the journalistic ideal accepted by groups of organized journalists is different from the liberal norm; the same as the values, attitudes, skills, knowledge and networks that are activated and that differ in objectives and scope. This allows to critically discuss that there is no single professional journalistic model, but different expressions of journalism defined by their own practices.
