Abstract

It is presented a quantitative study about the reception process and impact provoked by a dramatic feature film. This research paper examined the relationship between empathy and identification with the characters with the enjoyment and mood impact induced by a dramatic film, by using a sample of 102 college students. Participants were exposed to the feature film “Life is beautiful” and then filled out a self-report questionnaire to evaluate empathy like a personality trait. Impact of the feature film in the mood, identification with the characters, and enjoyment also were evaluated. Results showed that empathy was a significant predictor variable of the identification with feature film’s characters. Furthermore, it was observed that the identification with the character was the most important factor explaining the enjoyment and the induction of negative affect provoked by viewing the dramatic film. Those results supported the centrality of the construct of identification with characters in analyzing the effects of media entertainment and the reception process of dramatic feature films in particular.
