Abstract

This article examines and discusses the results of a reception study of the U.S. television series “Lost” by young audiences in Monterrey, México. The method used was focus groups, for which 29 young university students and graduates participated in five different sessions. Using Cultural Studies as a theoretical base, the following categories proposed in Palmer and Hafen’s model in 1999 served as guides for this research: naive acceptance, sophisticated acceptance, sophisticated rejection and deconstruction. Results indicate that there are other variations of such categories, as well as two others: naive rejection and distancing. This research may be useful for future audience studies, since it proposes an enhanced model of analysis for television viewer’s reception-related discourse.
