Semantic Network Analysis of pardon power in the Latin American press

What are the terms and concepts that have the strongest semantic association with the term “pardon power” in the Latin American press? This article aims to explore how different newspapers in Latin American countries present cases of presidential pardons. To this end, more than 1,000 news articles from newspapers stored in the EMIS database between 1990 and 2024 were collected. The justification for this study lies in the “ambiguous” nature of the pardon power. On the one hand, it is claimed that they promote the rule of law. On the other hand, they are considered incompatible with modern democracies, given their interference in judicial decisions. Methodologically, a content analysis of textual data is performed using semantic network analysis (SemNA) executed in RStudio. The results indicate that media coverage of pardons reflects their ambiguous nature. Thus, the resulting nodes (words) demonstrate the main justifications and/or questions surrounding presidential pardons in modern democracies: justice, human rights, freedom, power, among others. In short, the press reflects the main points of political, legal, and academic debate surrounding this presidential power.
